Precious Metal Clay (PMC) is a material made of metal particles combined with an organic binder and water to create many art forms including jewelry and sculpture. PMC can be manipulated just like any other clay and once it’s dried, it’s fired by torch or in a kiln to burn off the binder and sinter the metal particles.
After firing, PMC is pure metal and the piece can be handled like any other metal item. Metal clay can be soldered, burnished, tumbled, plated, etc. to finish the piece. There are many metal clays available for use: fine silver (999), sterling silver (925), bronze, copper, and even 22k GOLD.
Metal Clay was developed by scientists working at the Mitsubishi Materials Special Products division in Sanda, Japan in the early 1990s.
